Do you remember the excitement you had when you and your spouse were pronounced “husband and wife?” Sometimes, it can be hard to believe that you are already celebrating your 40-year anniversary, but congratulations on making it this far. The 40-year anniversary is the second biggest anniversary since the 25-year anniversary and calls for a celebration. Make your 40-year anniversary one that you and your spouse won’t forget.

Step 1

Write a love letter. In a letter, write to your spouse and tell him how much you love him and how grateful you are to have him in your life. Write about how you felt when you knew you wanted to be with her for the rest of your life and how you felt when you began your life together. Include fond memories that you have of him and qualities that you admire about him. Be sure to leave the note in a place where it will be easy for your spouse to find, such as the kitchen counter or in a lunch.

Step 2

Buy a gift. The 40-year anniversary is symbolized by the ruby. If your spouse likes jewelry, consider buying a ruby ring, necklace, bracelet or earrings.Only buy what you can afford--don’t go into debt trying to buy your spouse jewelry.

Step 3

Buy flowers. The flower symbolizing the 40-year anniversary is the nasturtium, which is ideal for planting in a garden. If your spouse isn’t into gardening, buy her a bouquet of roses or another favorite flower.

Step 4

Go out to eat. Celebrate your anniversary at a favorite restaurant. Let the restaurant know that you are celebrating your 40-year anniversary and you may enjoy a complimentary meal or dessert.

Step 5

Give a personalized gift basket. In the basket, include CDs, DVDs, a gift card, a magazine, a book, chocolate or other types of candy. Include a card with a personalized message and your signature.

Step 6

Have a family reunion. Anniversaries make perfect opportunities for family reunions. Not only are you celebrating your marriage together, you are celebrating the creation of your family together. Display pictures of you and your spouse on your wedding day and your children in their youth. Hold the reunion at a nice restaurant or in your home.

Tips

  • Personalized gifts mean more than store bought gifts. If you are crafty or can make things, consider making a gift for your spouse to celebrate your 40-year wedding anniversary.
