Birthday Gifts for Women in Their 30s

by David Montoya

Birthday gifts can be a difficult issue to approach. Even a thoughtful gift can be ill-received by a recipient if she interprets the meaning of the gift in the wrong way. One such issue is a gift that accidentally makes the recipient feel old. This is of particular concern for 30-somethings that may feel that their youthful days are behind them. If you need to get a gift for a 30-something woman, your best bet is to consider her lifestyle. Keeping gifts lighthearted and fun doesn't hurt either.

Household Gifts

30-something women tend to be established, working full-time or part-time, and either renting their own apartments or living in their own homes already. If this description fits the woman you need to buy a gift for, buy a household gift. Picture frames, vases or small pieces of furniture are usually well-received. Use your knowledge of the person to help guide you. For example, if you know the woman enjoys pairing food with wine, think about buying a table-top wine opener or a set of wine glasses. If she loves to read books, book ends or a reading lamp will go over well. Think about the recipient's personality and needs first.

Jewelry

Jewelry is a personal gift that is more suitable when a significant other or close friend is the recipient. If you go this route, a clear-cut favorite is anything with diamonds -- particularly for a special or milestone birthday. Alternatively, pick a piece of jewelry with another precious stone. Choose the woman's birth stone, or simply a stone in her favorite color, to show your thoughtfulness. Pay attention to the woman's style to determine what type of jewelry she would likely enjoy. A quiet woman with a simple style, for example, may enjoy understated earrings, while an extroverted woman may enjoy something more attention-getting.

Technology Gifts

30-something women are likely to be busy and on the go with a full-time job, full-time parenting, or a combination of both. Make their lives a bit easier by purchasing the latest technology for them. An MP3 player is well-suited for the woman with a long commute to work. A new smartphone will keep her connected to friends, family and work all in one device.

Beauty Gifts

The 30-something woman may be feeling a bit old. Make her feel pampered, relaxed and confident with the gift of an indulgent treatment. Healthier looking skin after a facial, or professionally painted nails, can make a woman feel good about herself. Purchase a gift certificate for a manicure, pedicure or other spa treatment that the woman enjoys. Make a day out of it by purchasing the same treatment for yourself and enjoying the spa time together.
