How to Do Princess Leia's Hair

by Mary Avant ; Updated September 28, 2017

"Star Wars" fan or not, practically everyone is familiar with the iconic Princess Leia buns. Made famous by actress Carrie Fisher in the "Star Wars" series, the futuristically chic style is an essential finishing touch to any Leia or sci-fi costume, and is surprisingly simple to recreate at home. Here's a step-by-step guide to getting her trademark look for yourself.

Prepare the Sock Buns

If you have pre-made sock buns, skip this step. If you're making your own, cut the toe off of each sock. Roll one sock in a downward motion until you reach the end of the sock, which should now be in the shape of a doughnut. Repeat on the second sock.

Part Hair

Using a fine-tooth comb, part your hair directly down the middle, splitting it into two equal sections.

Create Ponytails

Pull one side of your separated hair into a ponytail that sits directly above your ear, then secure it with an elastic tie. Repeat this on the other side.

Make Sock Buns

Take a sock bun and slide it over one ponytail so that it sits against the side of your head. Slide the sock bun back out to the ends of your hair. Tuck the ends under the sock bun and begin rolling back toward your head, tucking in loose strands as you roll. Repeat on the other side.

Secure Buns

Using bobby pins, tuck and pin hair under and around each bun to help anchor and secure it.

Finish With Hairspray

To complete the look, spray buns with a generous amount of hairspray to ensure a tight hold.
