Similar to pumpkin pie in appearance and texture, sweet potato pie is an equally tasty holiday classic. Though it contains healthy nutrients, this pie is high in calories and sugar and is best left as a once-in-a-while treat.
Ingredients
Generally, sweet potato pie has a plain pie crust and a custard filling. The filling is made with sweet potatoes, eggs, milk, evaporated milk or half-and-half and brown sugar.
Calories
According to Fine Cooking, one serving, or a slice, of sweet potato pie made from 12 to 14 oz. of sweet potatoes, 1 cup of half-and-half, three large eggs and 3/4 cup of packed light brown sugar contains 310 calories, including 130 fat calories.
Low-Calorie Options
MyDietBuddy.com notes that a slice of sweet potato pie made with a sugar substitute rather than brown sugar, two eggs rather than three and fat-free evaporated milk rather than half-and-half contains only 252 calories. Any or all of these substitutions can be made for a lower-calorie, lower-fat pie.
Nutritional Value
Sweet potatoes are a rich source of potassium. They also contain high amounts of potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, vitamin C and insoluble fiber.
