How to Plan a Dukes of Hazzard Birthday Party

by Jessica Taylor

Cousins Bo and Luke Duke sure knew how to have fun -- some might say too much fun. If you or someone you know is a fan of these good ol' boys, bring the spirit of Hazzard County to your next birthday celebration with a Dukes of Hazzard-themed party. The iconic characters and setting of this classic TV show and movie offer plenty of inspiration for creative menu items, decorations and activities.

Invitations and Party Favors

Stencil, print or glue a photo of of the Duke boys' car, the General Lee, on the party invitations, or incorporate images of the cast in your design. For a simpler look, simply use the car's signature orange shade as the main color scheme. For party favors, use brown paper bags painted orange with the General Lee's number, 01, stenciled on the front of each bag. Fill the bags with Hazzard-themed goodies such as plastic sheriff badges, toy cars and "Dukes of Hazzard" stickers.

Dukes-Themed Decor

Use country-chic items like vintage plates, pitchers and rocking chairs to make your spot feel like rural Georgia. Drape tables with checkered tablecloths and serve beverages in old mason jars. Get creative with table decorations and centerpieces by incorporating elements such as cowboy hats, model police cars and framed photographs from the TV show or movie. And bring in pops of the General Lee's signature orange shade with orange streamers, napkins and straws.

Party Activities

Ask your guests to come dressed as characters from the show. Have a costume contest, giving away toy cop cars or Dukes of Hazzard stickers as prizes. Set up an archery target and let party-goers take turns shooting a bow and arrow just like the Duke boys. Adults may safely shoot the real thing, but if you're planning a children's party, opt for plastic bows with suction cup arrows. If weapons aren't your thing, set up a row of old tires for a good old-fashioned tire jump obstacle course. Dukes of Hazzard-themed coloring books help keep children entertained.

Food and Drink

Serve food and drinks that wouldn't seem out of place in Hazzard County, such as pulled pork barbecue, hot dogs, collard greens and sweet iced tea. Use a chalkboard to list the party's "daily specials", just like a country diner, and name your menu items after characters from the show, such as Boss Hogg's barbecue or Rosco P. Coltrane coleslaw. If you're throwing a party for adults, put a handmade Hazzard County Moonshine label on any alcoholic beverages.
