How to Improve Masculinity

Many men, regardless of sexual orientation, experience diminished feelings of masculinity, which is a complex construct with physical, social and cultural dimensions. While it is difficult to fight nature and remake yourself physically, masculinity is -- to an extent -- something over which you have control. If you feel emasculated, whether from nature, a relationship or another personal factor, there are ways to step up your masculinity.

Eat healthily and engage in regular physical activity. Run or perform cardiovascular activities to stay fit. Lift weights to add bulk to your body. Exercise and a healthy diet can improve your self-image and reduce anxiety, tension, mental fatigue and depression.

Interact with other men. Engage in regular male bonding with coworkers, neighbors, friends and family members. Attend male get-togethers, such as Super Bowl parties or baseball games, to develop hobbies and interests that are conventionally “masculine.” Make an effort to develop relationships with men your age, even those with whom you may not think you have common interests.

Dress like a man. Avoid traditionally feminine colors, such as pinks and purples, if you feel feminized when wearing them. Choose solid or striped patterns of clothing, rather than feminine patterns, such as floral designs or polka dots.

Show confidence and self-assurance. Project an image of self-control to yourself and to the world. Show your strength by remaining relaxed and calm in stressful situations. At the same time, stand up for yourself when others try to take advantage.
