Sperry Top-Siders are an enduring style of shoe for both men and women. Originally designed by Paul Sperry in 1935, the Top-Sider was born of Paul's admiration for his dog's ability to run nimbly over ice and snow. Sperry's concept was to create a shoe that would allow the average sailor to gain better grip and balance when walking on board a ship. His success was so thorough that today Sperry Top-Siders are not only a cool accessory for the fashion forward but also a part of the regular issue uniform of the U.S. Navy. The most popular way to wear your Sperry's are with curled laces.
Place the left shoe in front of you with the heal side closest to you. Make sure you are working with about 6 to 7 inches of shoelace from eyelet to tip. Work on the left-hand side lace first.
Make a loop with the shoelace and pinch it at the eyelet between your right thumb and index finger. Your loop should be about 1 and 1/2 inches in length.
Take the end of the shoelace in your left hand and tightly wind it around the loop in your right hand, starting at the eyelet. After two or three wraps it should start to look like a hangman's noose.
Finally, as you near the end of the loop, you should see a small loop into which you can slip the pointy plastic end of the shoelace. Slide the lace's end through the loop and then pull your Sperry spiral up away from the eyelet to trap the lace and fasten the spiral in tightly.
Repeat three more times with your other laces.
