Vegetarian Fast Food Options

by Cynthia Myers

Vegetarian eating and fast food don't seem to go together, but if you're on a road trip or hungry for a quick bite, or out with friends who crave fast food burgers, you may find yourself eating at a fast food restaurant. More and more fast food restaurants offer options for vegetarians. A little menu sleuthing can help you make a vegetarian fast food meal.

Most fast food restaurants offer salads. Make sure they aren't garnished with bacon bits and if you're vegan, ask that they hold the cheese. Some restaurants even have salad bars, which allow you to add healthy additions such as chick peas or nuts.

Baked potatoes are a safe bet for vegetarians. Some restaurants even allow you to dress them up with broccoli or other healthy toppings. The french fries or potato cakes are vegetarian-friendly at some fast food chains, but others use lard in the frying oil, so ask or do research online before you order.

Order a burger with everything—hold the meat (and cheese if you're vegan). Or order a vegetarian sub sandwich with lots of vegetables.

Order a vegetarian pizza, hold the cheese if you're vegan. Ask for extra peppers, onions, mushrooms and other vegetables.

Mexican Food

Tacos, burritos and quesadillas can be made vegetarian by omitting the meat (and cheese and sour cream if you're vegan). Verify that the beans contain no added animal fat. Spanish rice and guacamole are other good Mexican food options.

Other Ethnic Food

Ethnic fast food restaurants that offer Indian, Thai, Chinese or Middle Eastern foods are good bets for vegetarian options. Vegetarian egg rolls, spring rolls, samosas or falafel are tasty vegetarian fast food choices.
