According to the American Matchcover Collecting Club, the first matches were invented in 1827 by John Walker, an English druggist. He marketed a sulfur-tipped wooden splint that was difficult to handle. Today, matches are safer to use and are a convenient way to start a fire for camping, cooking or lighting candles. Put out a match as soon as you are done with it to prevent accidental fires.
Hold the match securely in either your left or right hand.
Purse your lips as if you are about to whistle.
Bring the match 6 inches away from your mouth. Blow hard toward the flame to put out the fire.
