Underneath.com explains that thongs have been worn by men in ancient civilizations for centuries, especially in South America. Today, men purchase and wear thongs for a number of reasons: Perhaps they want to work on their tan or eliminate visible tan lines. Or, a guy might want fancier packaging for exotic entertainment. A man thong, also known as a banana hammock (for obvious reasons), can be created quite easily by sewing two pieces of fabric together.

Choose the fabric. If you plan on showing off your banana hammock to a special someone or to a wild crowd of adoring fans, have fun selecting from the wide array of choices. Consider using leopard or zebra print or sparkly sheen fabric made of Lycra. Or choose soft and comfortable fabric like a cotton blend or silk.

Make the first piece of fabric, which is the waistband. Take a tape measure or a piece of string and wrap it around the part of your body where your underwear fits comfortably. If you need additional help with determining your waist size and where to measure, put on a thong you already own and measure around the cloth.

Cut a piece of fabric that satisfies the dimensions of your waist. Determine the thickness of the cloth by assessing if you prefer a string-like thong or one with a wider waistband. Sew an elastic band around the cloth. Try on the waistband and ensure it's not to loose or too tight before proceeding to add the second piece of cloth.

Create the second piece of the thong, which is the cloth that covers your genitalia and is attached from the front of the underwear to the back. To do this, you will need to get the length of the fabric and the width. The width will vary and will obviously be wider in the front of the thong than the back.

Measure the length of the cloth on the G-string that extends from the front of the body to the back. Use an existing thong and a piece of thread to get this measurement. Use a piece of thread, and run it along the front of the thong around to the back. Cut the piece of thread and straighten it out along a tape measure. Write down this number.

Measure the width of the “hammock” itself, which will ultimately be a cup-like triangle for the front and, depending on taste, fabric to cover your butt or a string to run through the cheeks. Stretch out the cloth of an existing thong and attempt to trace the shape along a piece of paper.

Cut out the piece of cloth using the dimensions of the paper pattern. Err on the side of drawing a pattern with more fabric than less: You can always cut excess fabric; adding more is difficult. Sew elastic bands to the sides of the fabric: The elastic will ensure the cloth will fit snugly to your legs and will hold everything in place.

Sew the second piece of fabric to the waistband. Add sequins, beads or any other embellishments to disguise the stitching in the front if desired.
