You can help children learn about Japanese culture by introducing them the kimono. The kimono is a traditional garment worn by women and children. The kimono is T-shaped and is held closed on the body with a sash, known as obi, in Japanese. Craft a kimono out of a bedsheet for children to wear to give them a taste of Japanese culture.
Fold a twin flat sheet in half lengthwise.
Measure the length between your child's shoulder and toe.
Cut the sheet’s ends so that what remains is equal to the length measured.
Measure the width of your child's shoulders.
Trim one side of the folded sheet so that what remains is equal to double the width of the shoulders measurement.
Lay the folded sheet on a surface and cut a slit up the center of the top layer to the fold.
Add design to a plain colored sheet by applying paint to a cork's end and making a zigzag line of dots at the bottom edge of the right panel of fabric. Continue to create a zigzag line of dots up until you reach the fold. You may also use a paint brush to create other designs on the fabric such as fish or hearts.
When the paint has dried, place the sheet over your child's shoulder and wrap a ribbon around her torso. Shift the fabric along the side of the body so that the front and back overlap so you will not need to do any sewing along the side seams.
