Wigs are a convenient way to temporarily change the texture, color or style of your hair. Similar to human hair, synthetic wigs can suffer from frizz due to dryness or damage. This is often the result of excess brushing, styling, or the use of heating tools and products. Special maintenance is required to maintain the appearance of a wig and keep it looking in tip-top shape. Frizz can be corrected through several simple procedures to improve the longevity of your wig.
Comb out the wig with a wide-tooth comb. Gradually work from section to section, beginning at the bottom layers of hair and working your way up. Pin back the top layers of hair to easily reach the bottom layers. Gently remove any tangles or knots to prevent further damage.
Fill the sink approximately half-way full with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of professional wig shampoo to the water and mix. Submerge the wig in the cold water. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the wig as this can cause damage. Allow the wig to sit in the water for 3 minutes.
Remove the wig from the cold water. Remove any excess water from the wig with a dry, clean towel. Apply a dime-size amount of wig conditioner to the ends of the wig, as this is typically the frizziest part. Dabs of wig conditioner can also be added to any hard-to-resolve knots and tangles.
Drain the cold water and wig shampoo mixture from the sink. Refill the sink with fresh cold water. Submerge the wig with conditioner in the cold water. Swish the wig back and forth in the water to rinse it clean. Run your hands through the hair to ensure that all the conditioner is removed.
Remove the excess water from the wig by patting it with a soft clean towel. While still damp, use a pair of sharp shears to trim the ends of the wig. If you do not have the ability to cut the hair on the wig evenly, bring it to a professional hairstylist to complete the task properly.
Place the wig on a mannequin head to allow it time to thoroughly dry. Avoid using a blow-dryer to quicken the process as this can cause the frizz to return. Lightly spray the wide-tooth comb with anti-static hair product. Comb through the wig and remove any knots or tangles.
Run a fabric softener dryer sheet over the dried wig. This will smooth any fly-a-ways and hard-to-resolve frizz problems that may persist. Style the wig in whichever way you’d like. Finish with a light-weight hairspray to keep the hair in place.
