9 Delicious Ways to Have Chocolate for Breakfast

by Maria Beltran

If you grew up in a household like mine, "Nutritious before delicious" was the law of the land. Adults know better, though. Life is too short, and sometimes all you want is to start your day in a happy place-- at least as far as your tastebuds are concerned! These delectable breakfast recipes should satisfy we chocoholics everywhere.

1. Chocolate Glazed Doughnuts

A true chocoholic knows this fear well-- a box of assorted donuts is unleashed on a general populous and you are not the first person in line. Never be stuck with a crusty old cruller again! These homemade beauties provide the perfect conveyance for as much as chocolate glaze as your heart desires.

2. Chocolate Scones

Scones are quite the breakfast oxymoron. The best scones are dense but also light, sweet but also savory-- is it a biscuit or a pastry? Your tastebuds don't care! Start your day right with this tasty quick bread.

3. Chocolate Croissants

If you have ever eaten croissants popped out of can, this recipe will redeem you. Yes, we are all guilty. Thankfully we all have a chance to enjoy delicious homemade versions of this classic breakfast pastry.

4. Chocolate Stout Muffins

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single beer rich in texture and flavor must be in want of a breakfast pastry. But seriously, there is something very magical about pairing wheat with wheat. (I dare you to drink a lager with your next yeast donut!) In the case of chocolate, stouts do the job very nicely.

5. Double Chocolate Banana Muffins

I happen to be a huge fan of the banana/chocolate combo, so this recipe puts me over the edge every single time. The bananas make this a healthy breakfast, right? The chocolate chips may be optional, but not in my world!

6. Nutella Elephant Ear Pastries

If you're lucky enough to have access to an authentic French patisserie, good for you. If not, there is still hope. When regular breads just don't cut it, and you yearn for that light and flaky, caramelized crust that only comes from blending gobs of fat with flour (and sugar), this recipe is for you. God bless butter. And the French.

7. Breakfast Cookies with Coconut & Cacao Nibs

I'd like to take a moment to discuss the cacao nib. These fully dried and roasted pieces of the cacao seed is where all cocoa solids and butters are extracted. In other words, they're like the infinite singularity before the chocolate big bang-- and they're glorious. Not as sweet as processed chocolate, nibs are a must-try for anyone truly committed to cacao, its flavor and health benefits therein. You can usually find them at more speciality grocery stores and markets.

8. Chocolate Chip Cinnamon Bread Pudding

Anything with bread, butter and cream can be turned into a tasty breakfast-- and this easy bread pudding is no exception. Besides since when is starting your day with dessert a bad thing?

9. Chocolate Protein Oats

If your mornings are rushed and you're looking for something to prepare the night before, these oats are for you! Letting it sit overnight lets all the oats soak up the cacao glory. It's a perfect alternative to oatmeal bars and overly sweet, processed pastries.
