While ginger may seem to be not much more than a lumpy, knotted root, this somewhat unattractive rhizome is a powerful herb with a pungent, spicy flavor and aroma. According to University of Maryland Medical Center, the herb's active components are volatile oils and compounds. Incorporated into a simple homemade hair treatment, ginger oil improves circulation, leaves your head feeling tingly and smelling fresh, and may even stimulate hair growth. Additionally, ginger oil, which contains natural anti-inflammatory properties, is an effective, natural way to control dandruff.
Cut a piece measuring about 1 inch from a fresh ginger root, then use a paring knife or a vegetable peeler to remove the papery brown covering.
Grate the ginger with a fine grater. You can also place the peeled ginger on a cutting board and mince it very finely with a chef's knife.
Pour approximately 4 ounces of light sesame oil into a cup or small bowl.
Place about a teaspoon of grated ginger on a piece of clean cheesecloth measuring about 5 inches by 5 inches. Fold the cheesecloth up around the ginger to make a small packet. Hold the top of the packet closed with your fingers.
Hold the packet of grated ginger over the sesame oil, then squeeze several drops -- about one-quarter teaspoon -- of ginger oil into the sesame oil.
Mix the sesame oil and ginger oil thoroughly with a fork.
Massage the oil gently into your hair. Be sure to coat your hair from the scalp to the tip.
Leave the oil in your hair for 10 minutes, then wash your hair with a mild shampoo.
Don't use ginger oil if your scalp is broken out or sensitive.
