Skin Lightening Remedies for Black Skin

While there are many medical treatments that can be used to help lighten the skin, including chemical peels and dermabrasion, these remedies are expensive and somewhat invasive. However, there are some natural home remedies that can help to lighten black skin without the use of chemicals or medical treatments. These remedies have not been approved by the FDA, however, so consult your doctor or dermatologist before trying any of them on yourself.

Licorice Extract and Jojoba Oil

According to Julie Gabriel, author of "The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup, and Fragrances,” a mixture of licorice extract and jojoba oil can be used as a topical treatment for help lighten black skin. To make this mixture, combine ½ tsp. licorice extract with 4 tsp. jojoba oil in a small, clean bottle with a tight-fitting lid and shake the mixture to combine the ingredients. Pour a small amount onto a clean cotton pad and dab the cotton pad on the skin. Leave the mixture on the skin for 45 minutes before rinsing the area with clean water and washing with a very gentle cleanser. Apply your regular moisturizer if you use one. This treatment can be used daily as long as it does not cause any irritation. Unused portions of the mixture can be stored in a cool, dark and dry place for one month.

Tomato Leaf Essential Oil, Sandalwood Essential Oil and Sesame Oil

According to Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy,” a mixture of tomato leaf essential oil, sandalwood essential oil and sesame oil can be used to help lighten dark skin. To make and use this mixture, combine ½ tsp. tomato leaf essential oil, ½ tsp. sandalwood essential oil and 3 tbsp. sesame oil in a small container, and stir or shake to combine. Gently massage a quarter-sized portion of the mixture onto the skin with clean fingertips. Leave the mixture on the skin for 30 to 35 minutes before washing with a gentle soap and applying your regular moisturizer. This treatment can be applied once per day as long as no irritation occurs, and unused portions can be stored in a dark, cool place or in the refrigerator for 30 days.

Papaya Fruit, Lemon Juice and Cucumber

According to Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies,” a mixture of papaya fruit, lemon juice and fresh cucumber can be combined and applied to dark skin to aid in the lightening process. To make this mixture, combine ½ peeled papaya, the juice of ½ lemon and ¼ peeled cucumber in a blender, and puree until a moderately thin paste is formed. Apply a thick layer of the mixture to clean skin and leave it on for 45 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and wash with a mild soap to remove the sugars from the fruit. This treatment can be used twice per day, and unused portions can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours.
