When the digestive system is not functioning correctly, you feel it throughout your body. A colon that has built-up waste products and toxins might make you feel sluggish and fatigued. While the jury is still out on the positive effects of cleansing and detoxifying the body, MayoClinic.com reports this diet plan provides an energetic feeling. There is no scientific evidence that cleansing improves your overall health, but a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is certainly a practical approach to eating when combined with lean protein and fiber.
Select fresh fruits and vegetables that appeal to your pallet. Combining fruit to develop a tasty and satisfying juice drink gives you a chance to experiment. Consider a combination such as apple or pears mixed with a berry, like raspberry. Try banana mixed with papaya. For a change of pace, switch to vegetables, such as celery and spinach.
Wash the ingredients thoroughly under cold water and cut down bulky fruits and vegetables to a manageable size. Place the ingredients into a juicer or blender and let the contents blend to the desired consistency. Refer to the operator’s manual for your blender or juicer to determine the best size for the device.
Add 2 tbsps. flaxseed. MayoClinic.com states that flaxseed is a rich source of essential fatty acid that also acts as a laxative. Those with intestinal problem such as diverticulitis should skip the flaxseed and just blend the juices. If you are unsure whether flaxseed is recommended for you, do not include it in the juice cleanse.
- If you are on a physician-restricted diet, consult your doctor before adding to the plan. Cleansing can produce side effects such as dehydration, fatigue, bloating and nausea. Discontinue the cleanse if you experience any blood in the stool or painful cramping, and see your doctor.
- Do not use flaxseed if you are prone to any digestive or intestinal problems. Do not use flaxseed if you have been diagnosed with Crone's Disease or irritable bowel syndrome.
