People love the beach -- even the surf and sand in winter appeals to some beachgoers. If you plan to visit the beach during the off-season, you'll need to adjust your beachwear for cooler temperatures and changing conditions. Whether visiting a tropical beach or an oceanside community in New England, you should dress in layers to prepare for winter beach activities.
Cool Beaches
Setting sail for a beach that has cool temperatures in winter? Since conditions are not conducive for swimming, you can leave the swimsuit behind. Stay comfortable as you shell hunt or hike the dunes by wearing a soft, long-sleeved shirt and slacks made from a stretchy fabric like a poly-cotton blend. Natural and bold colors work for winter beach fashion, but some stylists suggest that white jeans work too. Pair the jeans with ballet shoes or flat-heeled boots. Layer clothing to shield your body from cool temperatures. A water-resistant windbreaker or light jacket is suitable for some beaches. Go with a heavier jacket if facing frigid temperatures.
Warm Beaches
Warm, soft sands may feel nice on your toes, but in winter you should have a few key pieces of clothing on hand. Women should pack a snuggly terry coverup or a colorful sarong for a quick wrap against winter breezes. Men should wear shoes that cover their feet when dining beachside in winter. Keep a lightweight jacket handy for moonlit walks. A cotton polo and medium to long length shorts are must-haves for men.
Beachy Accessories
Finish your outfits with whimsical, stylish beach accessories. A wide-brimmed, straw hat is always appropriate for beachwear. Oversized sunglasses, a wide cuff or bangle bracelet shows off a winter tan. Select shoes that allow you to walk comfortably but provide your feet with some protection. Your shoe choices can range from open-toed sandals to colorful, rubber boots. A long, fluttering scarf or silky scarf can add style to a simple beach outfit.
Winter Skin Care
Laying flat on your back in the sand may not be an option for you, but don't forgo the sun protection. Wear a face and body moisturizer that contains a reasonable SPF, at least 15, preferably 30 or above. You can avoid chapped, winter lips by keeping lips protected with a soothing balm that contains an SPF.
