Party Idea: How to Make a Lei

by Machelle Vanderhoeven and Malissa Levesque

Create a one-of-a-kind flower lei using either fresh or silk flowers. Originally envisioned as an alternative to bridal bouquets and corsages, this modern update to the Hawaiian lei is extremely versatile. Distribute these leis as a bridal shower or party favor, create a flower lei station for a fun party craft, or wear one as a bouquet or corsage replacement! And since you are creating these beauties from scratch you can choose the colors, flowers, and greenery to perfectly match your party or wedding theme.

Cut Your Embroidery Thread

Measure the thread from your right shoulder to the end of an outstretched left arm and cut. This will be enough for a medium length necklace (like the one in the above photo).

Thread Your Needle

Thread your needle and tie a double knot at the end.

Cut the Stems

Take your flowers and cut the stem off right below the flower head.

Thread Your First Flower

Take your threaded needle and insert it through the middle of your first flower. Slide the flower all the way down to the knot at the end of the thread.

Continue Threading Flowers

Continue adding more flowers by threading them in the middle. Make sure that each flower is facing the same direction and push the end of the flower head into the previous one to conceal any stem.

Add Leaves and Other Greenery

To add a bit more dimension to the lei you may want to add leaves or other greenery in between some of the flowers.

Tie Off the Lei

Once the thread is full of flowers, tie a knot at the end to complete the lei.

Ideas for How to Use Flower Leis

As a Party Favor. Hand these out to guests as they leave your next party. This would fit in well at a bridal shower, baby shower, tea party, or brunch.

As a Bouquet Replacement. Wear a fresh flower lei instead of carrying a bridal bouquet.

As a replacement to Bridesmaid Corsages. Imagine the gorgeous visual of a whole bridesmaid party wearing various fresh flower leis.

As an alternative to a flower crown. Something different for festival season, perhaps?

As a Party Craft Activity: Have a flower lei station at your next bash! It's perfect for both adults and kids.
