Age spots, also known as liver spots, are most often found on areas of the body that receive the most sun exposure. These spots are caused by a buildup of melanin. As you age, your natural rate of exfoliation, or the turnover rate of dead to new skin cells, decreases, and hyperpigmented areas of skin don’t slough off as quickly. Age spots do not require medical treatment but, for cosmetic purposes, a dermatologist may prescribe chemical fading or exfoliating treatments to help reduce their appearance. You can achieve similar results using natural home remedies.
Exfoliate your skin regularly to help remove the dead upper layer of your skin and expose newer skin cells. Create a natural exfoliating scrub by combining 1/2 cup of honey with 1/4 cup of sugar. Mix the honey and sugar together to fully combine the materials and store the mixture in a covered container in your refrigerator when not in use.
Wet your face with warm water and scoop a small amount of the scrub from the container. Apply the scrub to your face and use your fingers to gently rub the sugar-honey scrub on your face in a circular motion for one to two minutes. Wipe the scrub from your face with a wet, warm cloth.
Fade your age spots naturally using fresh lemon juice. Roll a lemon between your two hands to help release its juices. Cut the lemon in half and then rub one half of the lemon on your age spots. Alternately, apply fresh-squeezed lemon juice to your age spots using a cotton ball or cotton-tipped applicator. Rinse the juice off with warm water after 10 minutes. Reapply the juice nightly.
Apply fresh papaya to age spots as an alternative to using lemon juice for fading. Cut a thin slice of the skin from a green papaya. Press the fleshy side of the skin to your age spots for 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can cut the papaya into small chunks and press them into a pulp with a fork or potato masher. Apply the pulp to your age spots with your fingers, allowing the mask to sit for 15 minutes before rinsing. Use daily.
Apply an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen regularly to protect your skin. Lemon juice contains natural forms of glycolic and citric acids, which can cause increased sensitivity to the sun. The regular use of sunscreen will protect your skin and also help to prevent the creation of new age spots.
Consistency and patience are key to seeing results from natural or doctor-prescribed treatments; you may not see significant improvement for three to four months.
You can use the honey-sugar scrub to exfoliate your whole body while in the shower.
Lemon juice is very acidic and can burn sensitive skin. Rinse your skin immediately if you notice extreme tingling or a painful, burning sensation.
Keep the lemon juice away from your eyes.
