Your hair can be your best accessory, but it doesn't have to be long to make an impact. A cropped hairdo works as well for everyday as it does for a red carpet. Even stars who once kept their locks long and flowing -- like Miley Cyrus or Anne Hathaway -- have opted for cropped hair. Whether you're just checking out short styles or ready to get cropped, let Hollywood's heads inspire your next 'do.
"Miley Cyrus’ latest plunge into the shaved and cropped shows that layers can create instant versatility for short styles," said Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Hair Care. Here, she opts for volume by brushing it backward. To create a similar look, spray a root lifter on wet locks.
Halle's soft, diamond-shaped face looks good in just about every hairstyle, but she's stayed true to cropped hair for years. "This particular style really shows her face shape off in a very soft way," noted hairstylist Scott Fontana, owner of Newport Beach's Cristophe Salon.
This short, fringed pixie cut flatters Michelle Williams' oval face. "The key to this style is polish," noted Salas. "Make sure to invest in a professional grade flat iron and shine enhancing thermal spray."
Rose Byrne marries three trends in one with this cropped do: bangs, bobs and blunt. Salas says that Byrne does a great job of adding volume to her hair, which is key in any successful cropped style. "Avoid having the hair lie flat against the head with no movement or shape," he said. "Rose avoids this by adding some oomph to her style with volumized ends."
Even with the super-short length, Anne Hathaway looks soft and feminine in this cropped, wispy haircut. Fontana says Hathaway's hair texture is perfect for this look. If you want to recreate a similar look, skip the hair products and play up your hair's natural texture.
Singer Alicia Keys looks chic in this medium-length, glossy haircut. "She has an oval face shape that almost any hair cut will look good on," noted Fontana. "The color really brings out and enhances her eyes and skin tone and the sharp angle gives her soft face shape a little edge."
Piece-y, super short layers are Ginnifer Goodwin’s best friend. This particular style looks best on straight, slightly wavy and fine locks, but Salas warns to skip this one if your natural texture is really curly or thick.
"Ashlee Simpson sports an angled, long-front bob perfectly," said Salas. The side-swept fringe frames her face, which is accentuated further by the deep side part. Use a hair serum after straightening for extra shine.
