In order to keep leather shoes looking their best, it is important to learn how to store them. Leather shoes can last for years, even decades, if they are cared for and stored properly. The first step is creating the proper storage space. Then, clean, condition and store each pair of shoes so they continue looking almost new.

Items you will need

  • Newspapers
  • Felt shoe bags
  • Shoe boxes
Step 1

Create a space that is cool and well-ventilated to store your leather shoes. A dedicated rack that will allow you to line shoes up with the proper amount of space is ideal. Leather shoes that are crammed into an area can get damaged and lose their shape. Shoe bags aren't ideal for storage because leather shoes often get stuffed into the pockets and damaged or bent out of shape.

Step 2

Insert shoe trees into leather shoes that may not get worn as often as some of your other shoes. This will help the shoes retain their shape.

Step 3

Store patent leather shoes in felt or canvas shoe bags so they remain shiny and freshly polished.

Step 4

Stuff leather shoes with newspaper or rolled-up cotton athletic socks to help them retain their shape and protect the interior of the leather shoes. This is a less expensive method than the shoe tree -- and it achieves the same results.

Step 5

Store leather shoes in their original shoe boxes if space permits. A quick poloroid or digital snapshot of the shoe can be attached to the box so it is easy to find the pair you are looking for.
