How to Season Popcorn With Nutritional Yeast. Nutritional yeast is a non-active form of yeast that the Ancient Egyptians prized for its health-boosting qualities. Rich in amino acids, a complete protein and fantastic source of B complex vitamins, nutritional yeast is a healthy and tasty addition to just about any food, including freshly popped popcorn.
Measure 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels into a heavy bottomed pot and then add 1/2 Tbsp. of olive oil on top. Stir the kernels in the oil until they are all fully covered and then cover the pot. Turn it onto medium high and allow to sit until the kernels stop popping. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
Mix up your nutritional yeast seasoning while waiting for the popcorn to pop. In a small mixing bowl, measure in 1/2 cup of nutritional yeast and 2 tsp. of salt.
Add your choice of additions to your popcorn seasoning. Try grated Parmesan cheese, onion powder, cayenne pepper, a few drops of soy sauce or hot sauce, or simply leave it plain with the salted nutritional yeast.
Mix all of the ingredients together well and place into a salt shaker or old spice container with sifting holes. Sprinkle as much seasoning onto your popcorn as you like. If you use all dry ingredients, store the extra seasoning in a cool, dry place. If you use any wet ingredients, store your seasoning in the refrigerator and use within a week.
If adding hot sauce or other liquids to your popcorn seasoning, stir just one or two drops at a time into the nutritional yeast and salt, allowing the powder to soak in the liquid completely before adding more.
