How to Pop Corn in a Paper Bag in the Microwave Without Scorching It

by Angela LaFollette ; Updated September 28, 2017

Popcorn is a preferred snack among many people, but it often contains unnecessary additives and seasonings, and it can be expensive. Instead of purchasing packaged popcorn bags sold in supermarkets, you can buy the kernels in bulk and make your own in brown paper bags. Making your own popcorn will allow you to customize it with your favorite seasonings, which can make it healthier. When you microwave the popcorn, you need to monitor it carefully so that it does not scorch.

Open a brown paper bag and sit it on the counter top. Pour in ½ cup of popcorn kernels.

Fold the top of the paper bag over twice so that it remains closed.

Place the brown paper bag in the microwave so that it stands vertically.

Set the microwave on high for 3 minutes. To prevent the popcorn from burning, listen to the popcorn as it pops. If you hear 4 to 5 seconds between the kernels popping, then remove the popcorn from the microwave.

Remove the bag from the microwave. Allow it to cool for 1 minute and open carefully so that the steam does not burn you.

  • Pour the popcorn in a bowl and drizzle olive oil or melted butter over it. Sprinkle the popcorn with salt, pepper, cayenne or your favorite seasoning.
