Items you will need

  • 2 boxes of cake mix + ingredients
  • Frosting
  • Food coloring
  • Butter knife
  • Round candies
  • 2 square baking pans
  • Spatula

Custom cakes are extremely fun and exciting for the recipient but often carry a hefty price tag. Why not give the fisherman or fisherwoman in your life a custom cake for less than $10? Here is how to make a fish shaped cake.

Making a Fish-Shaped Cake

Step 1

Mix the cake mix according to the directions on the box. Pour the mix into the square pans and bake as directed.

Step 2

Remove the pans from the oven and let sit for ten minutes. Carefully dump the cake out by flipping the pans upside down and loosening the edges with a spatula. Allow to sit for another five to ten minutes.

Step 3

Place the cakes side by side so their edges touch. Cut a thin piece off of each edge that touches. Take a spoonful of frosting and spread it across the two edges you just cut. Paste the two edges together so that you are left with one long cake.

Step 4

Draw the outline of a fish with the aid of frosting and a spatula. With a butter knife, cut the shape out so you are left with a fish shaped cake.

Step 5

Mix frosting with food coloring in small cups to create different colors. With a butter knife and spatula cover the cake in one solid color. In different colors create scales and fins. Place circular candies in for the eyes (or single eye). That's it! Enjoy your cake!

Tips

  • Play with the color scheme and make colorful scales with the help of food coloring

Warnings

  • Don't frost the cake while it's hot, it will just melt
