How to Install an AC Window Unit

A window air conditioner is an easy adaptation to your home that can make a big difference on a sweltering summer day. Installing a window AC requires a bit of screwdriver-savvy and electrical know-how, but with a few simple steps, you can securely install a window air conditioner that will bring cool air into your home for you and your family to enjoy.

Examine your window air conditioner and check the manual to see how it is designed to mount. Different manufacturers will have varying methods of mounting a window AC.

Look at your window to determine how the window AC should fit. Some room air conditioners come with expanding panels that can be used to close any gaps in your window AC mounting setup.

Determine the power needed by your type of room air conditioner and install the necessary plug. Although many units can be run on a standard 120 volt home electrical socket, some more powerful units require that you install a higher voltage plug to supply adequate power.

Install and mount the air conditioner as indicated by the manufacturer's instructions. The controls should be facing toward the inside. Use your chosen adapter kit to close the holes in the air conditioning mounting setup. Make sure that the mounts are securely fastened.

Plug your new window AC unit into the installed wall outlet and power it on to test the unit.
