How to Freeze Homemade Breakfast Burritos

Homemade breakfast burritos provide a healthy portable meal for a family on the go. The burritos freeze and reheat well, making them a budget-friendly alternative to retail frozen breakfast products. The meal also tends to be healthier than fast-food breakfasts, which ensures that you and your little ones start the day off right.


Breakfast burrito recipes often use a mixture of egg, meat, cheese and vegetables to fill a warm tortilla. Wrap scrambled eggs and shredded cheese in a flour tortilla for a simple meal, or sprinkle the filling with salsa for a Southwest kick. Add diced lunchmeat for an extra punch of protein or fill the burrito with beans and cheese for a meat-free meal.


Allow your burrito filling to cool, place it in a warm tortilla, wrap the burrito and let the tortilla cool to room temperature. Freezing hot burritos can cause uneven freezing, which can alter the texture and taste of the food. While the burrito may still be safe to eat, kids may complain about the funny flavor.


Wrap each cooled breakfast burrito tightly in wax paper to protect the tortilla, then place it in a freezer bag. Although regular storage bags cost less than freezer bags cost, regular bags are not appropriate for freezing. Freezer bags are airtight, thick enough to withstand the cold and sturdy enough to reuse, which can help save money in the long run. Carefully push out the excess air in the bag and press the top seal closed. Write the date on the freezer bag; if frozen carefully, the burritos can last for a year.


Remove a breakfast burrito from your freezer about five to 10 minutes before breakfast. Unwrap the burrito, wrap it in a paper towel and place it on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave the burrito on medium-high for two to three minutes or until thoroughly heated. Add condiments, such as sour cream or chipotle dressing, after the burrito is heated.
