Tostitos corn chips are made with only 3 ingredients: whole white corn, vegetable oil and salt. Although the majority of the calories in Tostitos come from fat and carbohydrates, you can turn them into a high protein, high fiber snack by eating them with black beans, which contain 7.6 g of protein and 7.5 g of fiber per one-half cup.
Calories and Protein
One serving, which is about 7 chips, of Tostitos white corn tortilla chips contains 140 calories. These calories are composed of approximately 50 percent carbohydrates, 45 percent fat and 5 percent protein. Each serving contains only 2 g of protein, which supplies less than 5 percent of the daily value.
Fat
Each serving of Tostitos white corn chips contains 7 g of fat, which provides 10 percent of the daily value for most adults. Because vegetable oils are used to fry Tostitos, they are low in saturated fat, with only 1 g per serving. Tostitos contain no trans fats, which are the unhealthy fats that come from hydrogenated oils. Additionally, Tostitos are cholesterol free.
Carbohydrates and Fiber
Tostitos contain 19 g of carbohydrates per serving. The majority of these carbohydrates come from starch, a complex carbohydrate present in the corn used to make Tostitos. Tostitos contain no sugar and only 2 g of fiber. This 2 g of fiber provides 7 percent of the daily value for most adults.
Sodium
One serving of Tostitos contains 115 mg of sodium, which provides 5 percent of the daily value for healthy individuals. However, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests that adults over 50, African Americans and those with heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium per day. The 115 mg of sodium in each serving of Tostitos provides 8 percent of this amount.
Other Minerals and Vitamins
Tostitos corn chips are low in other minerals and vitamins. One serving of chips provides 2 percent of the daily value of calcium and iron, and no vitamin A or vitamin C.
Allergens
Tostitos are casein and lactose free. Both casein and lactose are milk proteins that can cause allergic reactions or gastrointestinal problems in some individuals. Tostitos white corn chips are also preservative free, MSG free and onion free. Although Tostitos white corn chips contain no gluten ingredients, they are manufactured on the same equipment as other products that contain gluten. For this reason, they are not labeled gluten free. Gluten is a protein present in wheat, barley and rye that can cause health issues for those with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
