Zaba's Mexican grill, a locally owned restaurant in Las Vegas, is focused on serving fresh and flavorful Mexican food. While Mexican food is known for being loaded with high-fat ingredients, Zaba's has been working hard, since its inception in 2001, to add healthy options. (Ref 2) You can certainly indulge at Zaba's and derail your diet, but with the right choices, you can enjoy a tasty meal and stay on track with your healthy diet.

Fresh Ingredients, Made From Scratch Food

Zara's has set itself apart from its competitors by using the freshest ingredients possible and by making all salsas, sauces and guacamole from scratch in-house. the staff hand trims and marinates all meats and shreds their own cheeses. (Ref 2) Food that has been prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients contain less preservatives and sodium than food that has been pre-prepared.

Menu Items to Avoid

If you are watching your waistline, you will want to avoid the burritos and nachos at Zaba's Mexican Grill. The oversized burritos contain more food than most people need to consume in one sitting and are packed with calories. The combination of a flour tortilla, rice and potatoes make the burritos high in carbohydrates and the cheese, guacamole and sour cream contribute a large amount of fat. The nachos, which are fried and covered with cheese sauce and your choice of meat, are also high in calories and fat. (Ref 1, this whole section)

Healthy Choices

Even though the fish tacos at Zaba's are lightly breaded, they are an acceptable option, weighing at 225 calories, 4 grams of fat, 19 grams of carbohydrate, and 16 grams of protein per taco. (Ref 3) If you have a craving for a burrito, try a bowl, which has all of the ingredients of a burrito but skips the tortilla to save on calories and carbohydrates. (Ref 1) One bowl contains 550 calories instead of the 755 calories you will get from a chicken burrito. (Ref 3) A salad at Zaba's can also be a healthy choice if you load it up with veggies. The steak salad contains 440 calories, 10 grams of fat, 50 grams of carbohydrate, 18 grams of fiber, and 43 grams of protein. (Ref 3)

Nutritious Options and Substitutions

Zara's allows you to customize any menu options, which means the meals can greatly vary in nutrient content. You can make any menu item more nutritious by adding extra fajita veggies, salsa, pesto, and homemade cilantro pesto. Though guacamole is high in calories, it also contains healthy fats and fiber, making it a healthy condiment. Limit cheese, sour cream, and dressings, which add unnecessary calories and fat. Choose brown rice instead of white rice and if you go for the burrito, choose a whole wheat tortilla. (Ref 1)
