To avoid these skin care concerns, maintain a consistent routine for cleansing and treating your skin. Wash Your Face With a Gentle Cleanser
Each night, wash your face with a gentle, water-based cleanser. This removes any dirt and bacteria that has accumulated on your skin throughout the day. Water-based cleaners are particularly soluble, and they rinse off without leaving any residue on your skin.
Choose the Right Products
After washing, apply a noncomedogenic moisturizer and a product that contains ingredients specifically targeted for black skin. According to the Essence website, products containing hydroquinone help to control excessive pigmentation. Because it inhibits the enzyme that sparks hyperpigmentation, hydroquinone brightens and evens your entire complexion. Skin care ingredients containing soy also help to lighten dark spots.
Skip Scalding Water
If you wash your face or shower using hot water, turn down the temperature so that it is lukewarm. Hot water can dry out your skin and cause ashiness. After cleansing, apply a thick moisturizing cream to your skin to further protect it from becoming ashy. Heavy lotions containing shea butter deliver the right amount of moisture for black skin.
Wear Sunscreen Daily
Sun damage is a common cause of uneven skin tone and dark spots among people with black skin. To protect yourself from harmful rays, apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Avoid spending extended time outdoors during times when the sun is the strongest, usually around midday. Further shield your skin by wearing protective clothing, such as hats, long-sleeved tops and long pants.
