How to Restore Protein in Hair

Hair that is naturally dry or damaged by weather conditions, heat and color treatments can easily lose its protein. Hair is made up primarily of protein, so when the protein is depleted, split ends, breakage and a dull finish can all become issues. Serums and treatments promising to revive your hair can prove costly. Instead, pop over to the grocery store snack aisle for an effective solution.

Pour 1/2 cup of warm water into a bowl.

Pour 1 pack of plain gelatin into the water and use a spoon to stir it until fully dissolved.

Add 1 teaspoon of cider vinegar to the bowl. This will fight frizz and add shine while the gelatin strengthens your hair.

Work the solution through your hair. Massage it in with your fingertips until your hair is completely coated.

Cover your hair with a shower cap.

Place a clean towel in the dryer until it is hot.

Wrap the towel around the shower cap, and twist the ends of the towel together before setting them on top of your head. Use a butterfly hair clip to keep them in place if necessary. The heat from the towel will open the hair shaft and and help the treatment to absorb for lasting results.

Allow the treatment to set in for 30 minutes.

Remove the towel and shower cap, and rinse the mask from your hair with warm water.

Massage a keratin infused shampoo into the roots with your fingertips, and rinse well. Massaging the scalp will stimulate blood flow and encourage the distribution of nutrients, and keratin based products will continue to strengthen your hair.

Apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, and allow it to sit for 3 minutes before rinsing completely. Conditioner locks in moisture provided by the apple cider vinegar, and helps to further bind split ends. Use an oil based conditioner for added shine.
