Poppies are worn at certain times of the year to commemorate the lives of those who died in World War II. Countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom wear poppies on Veterans Day or Remembrance Day in November, but in the United States, they are traditionally worn at Memorial Day in May. By wearing a poppy, you are showing your respect for the brave men and women who perished in the fight for freedom.
Push the safety pin through the stem on the artificial poppy.
Insert the safety pin through your lapel or shirt. The poppy should be upright on the outside of your garment.
Close the safety pin.
Wear the poppy all weekend during the long Memorial Day weekend which ends with the last Monday of May.

- Disabled veterans often can be found offering artificial poppies at Memorial Day in exchange for a contribution. Buying one from a veteran helps to fund groups that assist disabled veterans across the country. If you cannot find a veteran selling artificial poppies, you might be able to find them in the holiday section of a craft store. You can purchase a live Memorial Day poppy plant and use a real bloom.
