Keeping a tan can be as difficult as getting one in the first place. A nice, healthy tan looks wonderful on your skin, but keeping a tan is important as well. Exfoliate before you tan and after a shower. Exfoliating your skin keeps the dead skin cells from peeling off due to dry skin. Use a sugar scrub or a salt scrub to loosen dead cells and rejuvenate healthy skin. This will accelerate your circulation and help dead or dying skin be removed. You can also use an exfoliating brush if you do not have any of the scrubs.
Moisturize often. Nothing flakes a tan off faster than dry and damaged skin. Moisturize before you tan, during your tan and before and after each shower. The moisturizers keep skin healthy and from drying out, causing flakes to appear.
Be sure not to burn while in the sun. Sunburned skin means damaged skin and sunburned skin will peel faster than if you took it slow and got a healthier tan. Wear sunscreen when tanning to prevent your skin for burning. Not only will you get a healthier tan, you can protect yourself against skin cancer better.
Use self-tanning lotion. Self-tanning lotion will not necessarily prolong your tan, but it will keep your skin moisturized and give it a nice glow so it looks as if you are still tanned.
Most important, take it slow. Maintain that tan by being health conscious in the first place. Only tan for a few minutes per day, moisturize and don’t burn your skin.
