Swollen eyes can be the result of lack of sleep, allergies or the natural aging process. According to the Mayo Clinic, the tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles underneath your eyelids, deteriorate as you age. Normal fat that helps support the eyes can drift forward into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to look swollen. Fluid also may build up in the space below your eyes, contributing to a swollen appearance. There are some homemade treatments you can try to improve the appearance of swollen eyes.
Rinse your face with cold water as soon as you wake up. Try to wash your eyes for three to five minutes because the cold water will wake up your eyes.
Take a rounded metal spoon and place it in your refrigerator for a few minutes. When it gets cold, take it out and hold the rounded portion against your eye for few minutes. This will alleviate the swelling, according to the HealthGuidance website.
Cut two slices of cucumber that are 1/2 inch thick. Cucumbers are high in water. When chilled, they can reduce the swelling. Find a relaxing and quiet place to lie down and place the cucumber slices on your eyes for about five minutes.
Stay hydrated throughout the day. Try to drink six to eight glasses of water a day. If you don't like the taste of plain water, substitute it with flavored water. By keeping the body hydrated, your eyes will appear more awake and less puffy.
Apply a cold facial product like a mask or cream to your face. Instead of storing these products in your medicine cabinet, put them in your refrigerator. This way they will always be cool and help reduce puffiness.
