Dry hair treated with olive oil will regain its shine, luster and healthy appearance, and will better withstand processing and rough treatment. Treatments can be done weekly, monthly or whenever your hair needs an extra-deep conditioning. The treatment takes about 30 minutes, and you can read, relax or get some chores done while the olive oil is doing its work.
Choosing the Oil
Not all olive oils are the same, and the highest quality oil is also the best for your hair. For the best results, choose a cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. This oil retains the important enzymes and vitamins that will help condition your hair and is also low in acid. For long hair, you'll use about a 1/2 cup per treatment, so a single bottle will yield several treatments, making the cost of a high-quality bottle of olive oil not so daunting. If cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is not available, look for virgin olive oil. Avoid products that are simply labeled "olive oil" or "pure olive oil" since they have been chemically processed.
Scenting the Oil
Since olive oil does not have the most alluring fragrance, you may want to add fragrance to the oil before applying it to your hair. You can do this in advance by mixing a few drops of any essential oil in the olive oil bottle, or by placing the stem of a fragrant flower, such as lavender, directly in the bottle. Use the fragrance sparingly, since it will intensify as time goes on.
Olive oil treatment on dry hair is very simple. Place 1/4 to 1/2 cup of olive oil, depending on your hair length, in a small bowl. Put on an old shirt, or drape an old towel or sheet over your shoulders. Dip your fingers or a wide-tooth comb in the oil and brush the oil through your hair. Continue until your hair is saturated with the oil. Wrap your head in an old towel and let the oil sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Shampoo, condition, rinse and style as usual. Depending on your hair type, you may need to shampoo more than once to remove all the olive oil. For deeper conditioning, wrap your hair in plastic wrap and run the blowdryer over it on a hot setting for about five minutes. Then let the oil sit in your hair for 10 to 15 more minutes.
