Dying your hair can give you a wild, temporary look, a dramatic new style or a subtle change. You can add highlights, low lights or full head cover dye to your hair to give it a multifaceted and multidimensional appearance. You can change your color completely or enhance your current color. No matter what way you decide to go, there are different ways to dye your hair. Ranging from professional to do it yourself and store bought to homemade, you can use many techniques to dye your hair.
At-home Dye Kits
You can buy at-home hair dye kits in drug stores and discount department stores in the beauty and hair care section. You can also find them at beauty supply stores. The kits come in a wide range of colors and dye types. You can also purchase highlight kits, hair bleaching kits, temporary and permanent hair colors. An at-home kit is less expensive than having a stylist professionally color your hair.
The kits come with complete instructions and everything you need to dye your hair at home, including protective gloves, desired color, color mixer and a deep conditioner. In most cases, mix the color and the color mixture to create the dye. You will see it begin to take on some color, but the color will not be fully developed for a few minutes. Apply it to your hair starting at the roots and working down toward the tips. Let the dye sit on your hair for the time indicated in the instructions, usually 25 minutes. Thoroughly wash it out, and you will have dyed your own hair.
Paying a stylist to professionally color your hair will cost you more than an at-home kit, but going to a salon can offer a professional, experienced hand to dye your hair for you. Salons have many choices between dye types, colors and styles. A stylist can answer all the questions you may have about which type of dye is best for your hair or if your hair is in good enough condition to dye. The stylist can give expert advice on color selection and upkeep.
Lemon juice is a favorite at-home dye system that will turn hair blond in the sun. You can purchase other sprays from drug stores that will have the same effect. Simply put the juice onto your hair, and spend a day in the sun. The more juice you apply to the hair, the lighter it will get. Keep in mind that this will be most effective on the top layer of hair.
Kool-Aid is another temporary way to dye your hair. Purchase the powder of the color you would like to dye your hair, and mix it with half the amount of water indicated on the package. Apply it to sections of your hair, and wrap the sections in foil. Let the Kool-Aid sit for at least an hour. This color application will last two-to-four weeks, depending on how much you shampoo your hair.
You can also dye your hair with food coloring. Purchase the paste-type food coloring, and apply it to the sections of hair you wish to color. Wrap small sections of hair in foil. Let the food coloring sit for an hour at a minimum. Leave it in all night for the best color. This will last about a week depending on how many times you shampoo your hair.
For these homemade dyes, it is easier to see the results on lighter hair. Darker hair will most likely not show the color as well. The color will come out faster the more you shampoo your hair.
Temporary hair colors are available in spray and cream forms. This type of color only lasts until you shampoo your hair again. It comes in a wide range of colors, including wild colors such as hot pink, blue, purple, green, gold and glitter. Halloween is a time when this type of hair color is most popular.
