Shane's Rib Shack serves up a variety of ribs, but it also offers other classic barbecue dishes, such as wings, chicken and burgers, along with a few frosty drinks and sweet desserts. There is also a salad menu at Shane's, but that doesn't mean that the restaurant serves up much in the way of nutritious fare. Most of your choices are high in fat and sodium, but there are a few things on the menu that can be considered somewhat nutritious.

Salads and Side Dishes

The lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers in Shane's salads are low in calories and add a bit of fiber and vitamin C to your meal. The onion crisps and garlic toast, however, increase the calorie, fat and sodium content of your salad. Your best bet is the grilled chicken salad with the dressing on the side. Pass on the chicken tenders salad, as three strips of this fried chicken contain 220 calories and 23 grams of fat. Opt for a house salad with the dressing on the side or an order of sweet potato fries, which still contain fat but are a good source of vitamin A. Creamy and fried sides are out because they contain a lot of saturated fat and sodium, both of which can increase your risk of heart disease. The fries, for example, contain 430 calories and 26 grams of fat. The corn on the cob is a better option, with 190 calories and 12 grams of fat.

Ribs and Other Meat Entrees

Grilled, smoked and barbecued meats are the stars on the Shane's Rib Shack menu, and these are good sources of protein, iron and zinc. Many of the meat entrees, however, are quite large, which means that you'll also take in a hefty dose of calories, saturated fat and sodium. The Big Dad pulled pork sandwich, for example, contains 660 calories and 18 grams of fat, though you'll also get 29 grams of protein. The baby back ribs are rich in protein as well, but they also contain saturated fat, cholesterol and, thanks to the barbecue sauce, a large amount of sodium. If you must have ribs, opt for the half rack, or split an order with a friend or two, the American Heart Association recommends.

Chicken Dishes

Certain entrees at Shane's Rib Shack come with half a chicken, which means you'll consume a good amount of protein and potassium, but you'll also get lots of calories and fat. The chicken is smothered with barbecue sauce, which adds several hundred milligrams of sodium to your meal. The chopped chicken sandwich is one of your healthier options because it's made with a smaller portion of white-meat chicken and is only lightly sauced. It weighs in at 520 calories, with 15 grams of fat and 55 grams of protein. The grilled or smoked chicken meals are also a lower-fat option than the deep-fried buffalo wings or chicken tenders.

Ordering at Shane's Rib Shack

Start you meal by ordering a cup of water or unsweetened iced tea. Opting for one of these drinks will help keep your meal lower in calories than if you request a sugary soda or lemonade. Get salad dressing or barbecue sauce on the side, suggests the American Heart Association. This way you can dip your food, which can help you cut down on how much sodium you consume. Skip the peach cobbler or brownie for dessert because these types of desserts contain a large amount of sugar, and too much sugar isn't good for your heart. Shane's also offers a gluten-free menu, so let your server know if you're on a gluten-free diet.
