Mozzarella cheese is traditionally made from buffalo milk, although many varieties commonly found in grocery stores are now made from cow milk. Soft buffalo mozzarella, also called bufala mozzarella, has a creamy texture.
Calories
A 1-ounce serving of soft buffalo mozzarella cheese contains 85 calories, 55 of which come from fat, or more than 50 percent, according to the USDA National Nutrient Database. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends limiting your calories to approximately 2,000 per day, so be sure to monitor the amount of buffalo mozzarella cheese you consume to avoid overeating.
Nutrients
Eating soft buffalo mozzarella cheese can help you meet your daily protein goals. The Institute of Medicine recommends that you eat 46 to 56 grams of protein each day -- a 1-ounce portion of soft buffalo mozzarella cheese provides you with 6 grams of protein, or 13 percent to 10.7 percent of the protein you need in a day.
Fun Fact and Serving Size
Rolling buffalo mozzarella by hand gives it its layered texture, according CooksInfo.com. Doing so traps whey in the balls of buffalo mozzarella between layers of cheese. Mozzarella is very nutrient dense, so you don't want to overeat it. To make sure you only eat a 1-ounce portion, University of Illinois McKinley Health Center recommends you envision it as the same size as a pair of dice.
