Soy wax was created in 1991 as a cheaper alternative for beeswax. Soy wax is made from a combination of hydrogenated soy oil, coconut oil and palm oil with a small amount of beeswax. Soy wax is used as candle wax and also as a cosmetic wax. As an epilator, soy wax takes the place of paraffin or beeswax. Wax for hair removal is easy to make and only requires a few household ingredients. Soy wax is available in craft stores or through online retailers.

Fill the outer pot of the double boiler to the fill line and turn the heat to high. Add the interior pot when the water boils.

Add the soy wax to the interior pot. Reduce the heat and stir the wax until it melts.

Add the sugar and honey. Stir until the sugar melts.

Add the lemon juice and water and stir.

Turn up the heat and stir until the mixture reaches 230 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. When the wax turns dark, remove it from the heat.

Pour the wax into a heat-safe container. Let the wax cool to 110 degrees.

Store the wax in the refrigerator until ready for use. Warm the wax in the microwave until it reaches 110 degrees before use.

Apply a light dusting of baby powder to the area. The baby powder will remove excess oil to allow the wax to stick.

Spread a thin layer of the wax onto a small section of hair using a Popsicle stick, in the direction of hair growth. Hold the Popsicle stick at an angle, as if frosting a cake.

Press the cloth strips on the hair and smooth the strip with your hand. Leave at least 1 inch of the strip free, as a hand-hold.

Count to 10 and peel the strip off in the opposite direction to hair growth. Pull at an angle and remove the strip as quickly as possible.

Swab baby oil onto the skin to remove excess wax. Apply a lotion with salicylic acid.
