Most associate clay treatments with either a facial or body mask, but clay has a home in a variety of other beauty products. Some body scrubs, powders and soaps also contain clay for its oil absorbing, detoxifying and exfoliating properties. A fine-grained soil packed with minerals, clay comes in a variety of types and colors. Selecting the right one depends mainly on the needs of your skin.
Normal or Sensitive Skin Solutions
Those with normal to sensitive skin should choose a clay that won’t strip their skin of needed moisture. White Kaolin clay, made of kaolinite, or Yellow Kaolin clay are the mildest clay types that exfoliate and cleanse the skin without drawing out too much oil. Rose clay is another mild clay option; it contains iron oxides, giving it a slightly pink hue. Those with dark spots or scars should consider using Fuller's earth clay, which not only cleanses the skin, but also acts a mild bleaching agent.
Oily Skin Options
Those with oily complexions need clays that can pull excess oil out of the skin. These individuals should opt for a French Green clay or Rhassoul clay, which have a greater ability to absorb oil and draw out toxins. The main ingredient in these clays is magnesium oxide, which is a fat absorber. French Green clay is also commonly applied during body wraps.
