How to Steam Summer Squash

  • Distilled Water
  • Vegetable Steamers
  • Pat Of Butter

How to Steam Summer Squash. You can steam delicious summer squash whole, or you can slice or dice it into smaller pieces.

Step 1

Rinse squash well.

Step 2

Cut off ends and cut squash into pieces, if desired.

Step 3

If using chayote squash, cut into smaller pieces. The smaller the pieces, the more quickly they will cook.

Step 4

Place squash in vegetable steamer, cover and turn heat to high.

Step 5

Cook over boiling water 10 to 12 minutes if squash is whole, 3 to 5 minutes if cut into halves or pieces, and 18 to 22 minutes if it is sliced chayote squash.

Step 6

Check whether squash is done by poking with the tip of a knife and making sure it is tender.

Step 7

Drain well.

Tips

  • Use slices of squash in a salad or pasta dish, or chunks in a vegetable soup. Sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese and melted butter, and serve.
