The chemicals used in perms or relaxers can be harsh and irritating to your scalp. These chemicals, if not used properly can cause hair breakage and scalp burns, sores or dry patches. Even when used properly, your sensitive scalp may have a reaction to the chemicals. If you have recently gotten a perm and have noticed sores, scalp sensitivity or burns, the best thing to do is invest in some hair products and practice a hair regiment to encourage the healing process.
Cleanse the hair by using a gentle shampoo. Baby shampoo will be gentle enough to clean without irritating your scalp. Rinse your hair out with lukewarm, not hot, water. Hot water can cause dryness and irritate the scalp even more.
Use a deep conditioner, look for one that has vitamin E in it since it can help nourish the scalp and treat the burns. Leave the conditioner in your hair while you finish your shower then rinse out. You can also condition your hair separately. Leave the conditioner in your hair for at least 15 minutes and then rinse out.
Avoid heating products. Again the heat can aggravate your scalp even more. Use a leave in conditioner or serum that has aloe vera or vitamin E in it. Section off your hair and apply the product on your scalp and throughout your hair. Use a wide tooth comb to comb the product evenly from your scalp to the tip of your hair.
Do not pick on any scabs or sores on your scalp. Constantly touching your scabs or sores with unclean fingers can lead to infection.
Use a skin healing ointment if your burns and sores are more severe. Apply the ointment with a cotton swab. Follow the directions on how many times you should apply ointment.
