A black hoodie in the winter is as essential as a white T-shirt in the summer. The comfortable feel and casual style of a black hoodie sweatshirt makes it an appealing wardrobe choice. Its versatility means you'll probably be washing and wearing your hoodie quite a bit. Because of this, however, you may notice your sweatshirt fading to a gray hue. But don't despair. With a little help from your top-loading washing machine and a box of clothing dye, you can reinvigorate your sweatshirt back to its cool, chic look.

Step 1

Rinse the sweatshirt in a sink for 2 minutes. This removes large bits of dirt and debris and helps set the dye.

Step 2

Fill a measuring cup with 2 cups of hot water. Pour both packets of black dye into the cup. Mix well with a spoon until dissolved.

Step 3

Turn the washing machine setting to hot. Fill the tub halfway up with water. Use the spoon to stir the dye once more, and the pour the solution into the machine.

Step 4

Wring out your hoodie in the sink to remove excess water. Smooth out the sweatshirt by making sure it isn't crumpled or folded tightly in any areas. Place the hoodie into the washing machine and turn it to an extended cycle.

Step 5

Leave the sweatshirt in the machine when finished. Set the machine on a short cycle with cold water and add the appropriate amount of laundry detergent. Run the machine again.

Step 6

Place the hoodie into the dryer and set for 30 minutes on low heat. If you are concerned about your hoodie shrinking, place it on a hanger or lay flat to air dry.
