How to Fix Salon Gel

by Donna Tinus

When a nail technician applies salon gel to your nails, she usually creates beautiful, natural-looking nails. These nails generally hold up well to daily use, but occasionally, the gel nail might lift up from the nail bed or become chipped. You may also want to change the color of the polish, and decide to save money by doing it at home. Purchase a gel nail kit from a drugstore. It will contain everything you need to fix your salon gel nail. You will also need nail-polish remover to remove the old gel first.

Items you will need

  • Gel nail kit
  • Nail-polish remover
  • Small bowl or shot glass
Step 1

Pour enough nail-polish remover into a small bowl or shot glass to allow your fingernail to soak in. Place your finger nail into the nail polish. The nail should be completely immersed for five minutes.

Step 2

Soak a cotton ball in nail polish remover. Take your finger out of the nail-polish remover, and the gel should be dissolved. Wipe the nail with the soaked cotton ball to remove any remaining gel.

Step 3

Lightly rub the emery board from the kit over your nail to rough it up a little. This helps the gel adhere better.

Step 4

Apply one coat of gel. It comes with a small brush and is applied just like nail polish -- brush from the base of the nail out to the nail tip. Cover the entire nail.

Step 5

Dip the nail into the powder from the gel kit and wait two minutes. Brush the nail with the gel again, then dip into the powder again. Finish with one last coat of gel and wait five minutes for the gel to completely dry.
