Homemade Brush Cleaner

by Alane Michaelson

Homemade makeup brush cleaner can clean and condition your makeup brushes and their bristles. Cleaning makeup brushes prevents oil, makeup and bacteria buildup and adding conditioner can help keep your brushes' bristles in good condition. Bacteria in makeup brushes can irritate your skin and cause skin infections, clogged pores and rashes. Beauty supply stores sell pre-made brush cleaners, but you can make a cleaner using typical household materials.

Items you will need

  • Glass bowl
  • 1 cup of purified water
  • 1/4 cup of 70 percent alcohol
  • 1/2 tbsp. of dish soap
  • 1/2 tbsp. of baby shampoo
  • 1 tbsp. of spray-on conditioner
  • Empty bottle
  • Funnel
Step 1

Pour the purified water, alcohol, soap, shampoo and conditioner in the large bowl and gently stir. Do not shake or allow the mixture to foam.

Step 2

Pour the contents of the bowl into the empty bottle using the funnel.

Step 3

Dispense the cleanser onto your makeup brushes to clean, sanitize and condition the brushes. Scrub the brushes until they are thoroughly clean and rinse them until the water runs clear. Set the brushes on a clean towel and allow to dry overnight.

Tips

  • Any shampoo will work in this cleaner, but baby shampoo is the gentlest.

Warnings

  • If your brushes are old and full of oil, replace them to avoid serious skin or oil duct infections.
