6 Ways to Use Jojoba Oil in Your Beauty Routine

Jojoba oil is a relatively inexpensive, multi-tasking beauty oil. This oil (which, technically, is a liquid wax), is one of the most commonly used plant ingredients in cosmetic formulations because of its highly beneficial profile:

  • It is rich in antioxidants 
  • Has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Has fungicide properties 
  • Enhances penetration of the ingredients in a cosmetic formulation
  • Dissolves excess sebum on the skin
  • Does not feel greasy on the skin
  • Is rich in skin-beneficial fatty acids
  • Is relatively shelf-stable, so it does not go rancid quickly

These valuable properties explain why it is widely used as an ingredient in skin care, hair care and body care products. You can also experience the benefits of jojoba oil by trying some simple and effective beauty uses at home.

1. Use it to remove your makeup.

To remove your face makeup...

Add a few drops of jojoba oil to the palm of your hand. Rub your palms together and distribute the oil evenly on your face. Massage your face gently in circular motion. Use a damp towel to wipe the oil off your skin until all the oil has been removed. If you notice any makeup residue on your skin, simply repeat.

To remove your eye makeup...

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before starting. Add jojoba oil to two cotton rounds (about five drops each). Place the cotton rounds over your eyes and hold them in place for about 30 seconds. With very gentle movements, begin to wipe off your eye makeup, but try not to get oil inside your eyes. Use a damp towel to remove the oil. If you notice any makeup residue on your eyes, soak a cotton bud with jojoba oil and remove the residue.

2. Add a few drops to your face mask.


Add 1 Tbsp of clay powder and 1 1/2 Tbsp of jojoba oil to a glass bowl. Mix the ingredients until a smooth, paste-like consistency is achieved. Apply to your face evenly with the face mask brush, avoiding your eye area. Keep the mask on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse the mask off until your skin is completely residue-free. Pat your skin dry with a soft face towel. Follow with your favorite toner and moisturizer.

3. Use it as an intense moisturizing treatment.

Jojoba oil is known to effectively help to prevent transepidermal water loss, keeping the skin hydrated. It is also highly emollient, making the skin feel softer and more elastic, while being less greasy than other plant oils. This makes it a good option for most skin types, except for the very oily and breakout-prone ones.

After cleansing your face and applying a hydrating face mist, add a few drops of jojoba oil into the palm of your hand, rub your palms together to distribute evenly in both hands, and then pat all over your face with a gentle pressure.

4. Make a moisturizing hair treatment.

For a pre-wash deep conditioner...

Apply a generous amount of jojoba oil through your hair's ends and leave on for a few hours. Wash your hair as per your normal routine. Your hair will be much softer and easier to manage after your shower.

For a post-wash softening treatment...

Apply 1-2 drops of jojoba oil into the palms of your hands. Rub your hands to evenly distribute the oil. Apply to the ends of your hair to add shine and soften dry ends.

5. Use it as a shaving oil.

The emollient properties of jojoba help to soften the hair follicles and promote a safe and smooth shaving experience. Simply massage a thin layer of jojoba oil onto the area you want to shave. Let it get absorbed into the skin. After shaving, wipe hairs off the skin with a clean, damp towel.

6. Apply it as a post-shave moisturizer.

Evidence suggests that jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties that effectively work against skin infections and promote wound healing. This makes jojoba oil a great option as post-shaving treatment to help prevent razor-bumps. After shaving, simply apply jojoba oil to the area of the skin that you shaved and massage until evenly distributed.
