You might think the only things you can grill outdoors are hamburgers, hotdogs, steaks and chicken, but with the proper preparation, a grill can do much more. A closed grill acts much like an oven; the source of heat emits from the bottom of the grill and surrounds the food. Preheating the grill and using it to cook pizzas, even a frozen DiGiorno, takes the heat out of the kitchen. Use an outdoor gas or charcoal grill, rather than your kitchen stove, and help save on your energy costs.
Pile enough charcoal in the center of a charcoal grill to allow a single layer of coals across the bottom of the grill once they begin to burn. Start a gas grill with all burners on high. Shut the lid on either the charcoal or gas grill, to preheat the grill for about 15 minutes, much like you would an oven.
Spread the charcoal coals evenly over the bottom of the grill with a small garden shovel. Turn the burners on a gas grill to medium-high
Bring the temperature on both types for grills to 400 degrees F. Use a grill thermometer to monitor the heat of the grill, or attempt to hold your hand 3 inches above the grill grate for 5 to 6 seconds without the urge to remove it from the heat.
Place the DiGiorno pizza onto a pizza pan or stone designed for use in a gas or charcoal grill. Sit the pizza on the center of the grill grate and shut the lid.
Bake the pizza in your grill for about 13 minutes, or until the cheese melts and the crust is golden-brown. If you choose to place the DiGiorno pizza directly on the grill grate, spray the grate with a nonstick cooking spray and place the pizza on the grate. Bake for 8 minutes, lift the pizza with a spatula and turn it one-half turn. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese melts and the crust browns.
Remove the pizza from the grill and let it stand about 2 to 3 minutes before cutting and serving.
