How to Prevent Large Pores

Washing your face twice a day keeps pores unclogged, which is the best prevention against large pores.

Your pores can get clogged with excess oil, dead skin and blackheads, which will begin to expand their overall diameter. As you age, you produce less collagen and your skin loses its bounce-back factor, so even after your pore is unclogged, it remains enlarged. You cannot change the size of your pores. However, a healthy daily skincare regimen can help stop enlarged pores from occurring in the first place.

Wash your face using a gentle facial cleanser in the morning with lukewarm water. Rinse with cool water to tighten your pores.

Apply a moisturizer specific to your skin type -- oily, dry, combination or acne-prone. People with oily skin tend to have the most visible pores because the oils draw attention to the pore. If you have oily skin, look for moisturizers that are oil-free.

Apply a sunblock with a minimum SPF of 30 every day before leaving the house. Sun damage can attract attention to enlarged pores.

Wash your face before going to bed, especially if you wear makeup. Repeat your morning procedure: Wash your face with lukewarm water and rinse with cool water, and then apply your moisturizer.

Use an exfoliator twice a week to remove dead skin cells. You can use a facial scrub or an over-the-counter microdermabrasion kit. By removing dead skin cells, you keep the pores clear of debris and bacteria, while also making them appear smaller.

Tips

  • The thicker the moisturizer, the more oil it contains; the thinner the moisturizer, the more water it contains.

    Dermatologist procedures that can help prevent enlarged pores and reduce the appearance of pores are chemical peels, vitamin A treatments, laser treatments and professional microdermabrasion.

    Use a dime-size amount of moisturizer since too much moisturizer can clog the pores.
