However, effective home facial treatments can eliminate these toxins from the skin to ensure your pores are free of impurities. Because many store purchased products contain ingredients that can dry out the skin and irritate breakouts, homemade facial masks are effective and natural treatments that will pamper the skin and expel impurities.

Dead Skin Cells

The dermis is the dense inner layer of the skin where new cells consistently generate. As these cells ascend to the epidermis, the outer layer, they slowly die and fill with keratin--the protective compound of the skin. Over time, these dead skin cells accumulate making the skin look less vibrant and unhealthy. If left untreated, the pores can clog resulting in acne and other unsightly blemishes.

Homemade Facial Scrub Recipe

A homemade facial scrub uncovers newer cells and refreshes your skin. Consider this easy recipe from Skin-disease.org: In a bowl, combine 2 tbsp. of cornmeal mixed with water to form a paste. Add 1 tbsp. honey, 1/2 tsp. sandalwood powder and 1/2 tsp. khus-khus powder. Apply to your face in circular motions to lift away dead skin cells. Show caution when scrubbing around sensitive areas like the eyes and mouth as the mixture can sting. Rinse your face thoroughly with warm water and follow with your regular skin-cleansing regimen.

At-Home Steam Facial

Steam facials help to sweat away impurities while prepping the skin for your regular skin-cleansing regimen. Daily Glow recommends a simple facial steaming method to do at home. Either fill your sink with hot water or boil a pot of water. You can add a couple drops of thyme oil--a natural antifungal and antibacterial--or use green tea leaves or chamomile. These help to relax your skin as well as your senses. Cover your head around the pot or sink to trap the steam. Remain underneath the towel between five to seven minutes to allow your pores to open and drain. Rinse your face with warm water to eliminate impurities and debris. Follow with your regular cleanser.

Homemade Facial Mask

Using common household ingredients, you can make a non-abrasive, calming facial mask. Skin-disease.org recommends this autumn apple facial mask. Combine 1/4 of an apple, 1/2 tsp. of honey and 1 tbsp. of oatmeal in a small bowl. Mash the ingredients together thoroughly and apply to your face. Let the mask dry on your face for approximately 10 minutes and then rinse off. Oatmeal has a calming effect on skin that leaves it smooth and moisturized.
