Sensodyne Pronamel is a toothpaste replacement that gives the same benefits as regular toothpaste plus aids in dental re-hardening of tooth enamel and sensitivity. It guards against food acid eroding the teeth surfaces, and it contains fluoride to prevent cavities. Other than water and flavor, it contains 11 other ingredients.
Active Ingredients
There are two active ingredients in Sensodyne Pronamel, potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. Potassium nitrate is used in a 5 percent concentration to aid against teeth sensitivity and sodium fluoride in a 0.15 percent concentration to aid against cavity formation.
Humectants
Humectants are agents that take in water from the atmosphere and keep the surface that it touches moist. The humectants in Pronamel toothpaste are glycerin and sorbitol. Glycerin can be natural or synthetic, according to Paula's Choice, a website created by beauty expert Paula Begoun. Sorbitol is similar to glycerin in that it can be natural or synthetic and it can also act as a thickening agent in products, Paula's Choice notes.
Surfactants
Surfactants create a smooth gliding surface for the product to go across evenly. Surfactants in this product are xanthan gum and cocamidopropyl betaine. Xanthan gum is an odorless fermentation of corn sugar and can also be used as a skin conditioner and binder according to Cosmetics Info. Cocamidopropyl betaine can also be used as a skin conditioner and a foam booster, according to Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep. Its foam-boosting properties are used in toothpastes.
Thickening Agent
Thickening agents bulk up a compound to make it less thin. Hydrated silica is the thickener in Sensodyne Pronamel. This can also be used as an absorbent and is found in many minerals, plants and animals, according to Paula's Choice.
Water-Binders
Water-binders lock with water and help a compound mix well. The water-binder in this toothpaste is PEG-8, which is a propylethylene glycol compound, according to Paula's Choice.
Cleanser
Cleansing agents are safe detergent-like compounds used to clean the surface of the area it is intended to be used on. The cleanser in this toothpaste is sodium hydroxide which can also be used as a pH regulator according to Paula's Choice.
Sweetener
Sweeteners are put into products to make it more palatable to use. The sweetener used in this toothpaste is sodium saccharin, a flavoring 300 times sweeter than sugar, according to Cosmetics Info.
Opacifying Agent
Opacifying agents take out the transparent nature of some products, giving it a cream-like look. Titanium dioxide is the opacifying agent in Sensodyne Pronamel. It is also a coloring agent that makes the product whiter, according to Cosmetics Info.
