Lay's New Potato Chips Have a Trendy Anti-Inflammatory Ingredient

Anyone who’s a health nut probably wouldn’t touch a bag of highly processed store-bought chips with a 10-foot pole. But Lay’s newest potato snacks might make you rethink bypassing the chips aisle. They pack a surprising ingredient that wellness junkies love: turmeric.

Last week Lay’s, which falls under the PepsiCo umbrella, launched Poppables, a crisp and airy puffed potato snack that contains turmeric. Golden yellow in color, turmeric can fight inflammation, curb heartburn and indigestion, and prevent chronic diseases such as allergies and diabetes.

But it doesn’t stop there. Poppables, which come in sea salt and white cheddar flavors, are also on board with the whole-food bandwagon. Most puffed potato snacks usually feature “potato flakes” as the first ingredient, reports. But with Poppables, actual potatoes come in at No. 1.

And when it comes to ingredient lists, the sea salt flavor is the simpler of the two. It contains just five items: dried potatoes, vegetable oil, potato starch, sea salt and turmeric. The white cheddar flavor, on the other hand, contains ingredients that are less than ideal. This includes dextrose, a sweetener with a high glycemic index, which can cause your blood sugar to spike and increase your risk for cardiovascular diseases.

While we wouldn’t call them healthy per se, Poppables represent a step in the right direction and a major win for health-conscious consumers. Major corporations like PepsiCo are responding to demands for healthier, eco-friendly foods, all thanks to your choices at checkout.
